West Point Lake History Cruise
Come aboard the Miss Sally floating classroom for a peek into the past. The Chattahoochee River has long been a center of life, commerce, and transportation in this area. What many don't realize, however, is that what lies beneath the water is every bit as interesting as the beauty from above. From the American Indian village lost forever to the many caskets that were relocated, the impounding of West Point Lake altered not only the terrain, but the lives of the people living near its banks. The river and then West Point Lake, the floods, the loss of land, and now the joy it brings a community are central to understanding the history of the region. Shannon Gavin Johnson, the director of Troup County Historical Society, will share interesting facts and tidbits about the history of this body of water. In addition, former Georgia Representative Jeff Brown and a CRK guide will be sharing how the water quality in West Point Lake has much improved over the past 25 years- hear about politics at its best! The tour will start and end at Pyne Road Park. Cost includes a light picnic dinner with specialty sandwiches, chips and veggie tray catered by 505 Eats.Online registration required: https://chattahoochee.org/outings/general-watershed-outings/
