Hangin’ On Like a Tick’: Modern Southern Humor and Its Roots
Join us as Dr. Mary Ann Wilson shares her perspective on and a history of southern humor. From Mark Twain to David Sedaris, humorists have found rich material in the South—its manners and customs, its weather, its food, and its language. The flip side to Southern Gothic is the wealth of humor found below the Mason-Dixon line. Dr. Wilson's presentation will look back to the 19th-century southwestern humorists, Mark Twain's tall tales, and bring us up through Eudora Welty, Flannery O'Connor, Roy Blount, and Rick Bragg. Extravagant and eccentric, southern humor continues to wrestle with southern identity and what it means to be southern in the 21st century. Available at the LaGrange Memorial Library at 6 PM on September 29th. Sponsored by the Friends of LaGrange Memorial Library. Light refreshments will be served.
